The Giant Bamboo 5-Part Email Sequence

The Giant Bamboo

Hey! Today I wanna share a great story with ya.
Let’s get into it.
===
Two neighbors, James and David, both had big plots of land next to each other. They decided to plant bamboo trees together at the same time.
Neither of them knew much about the trees, they just thought they looked great.
So they planted their seeds.
They couldn’t wait until their land was FULL of bamboo trees.
They’d see each other while watering the soil and chat. They excitedly shared their vision.
James was to have the trees make a path leading to a small pond. He had a quiet sanctuary in mind.
David planned to cover his whole yard, but to use some of the trees to make money for him. Bamboo trees were in demand, so he figured he could sell a portion of them to produce some income.
James couldn’t wait for his vision to come to fruition. He even had a vision board collage up on his living room wall about how his yard would look when his bamboo trees had grown. He envisioned spending time at the pond with his family relaxing.
He consistently worked to water and fertilize them. He used fresh water, and made sure they had nitrogen so they had the greatest chance of success.
David used tap water.
James: “Hey David, don’t forget they’ve got a better chance to grow big and healthy if you use fresh water. The fluoride in tap water isn’t good for them.”
David: “Eh, it won’t make much of a difference. Cheaper this way.”
Over the coming months, James started to see less and less of David.
When he caught him out back one day he went over to see what he’d been up to.
James: “David, where you been? Haven’t seen you out here lately.”.
David: “They ain’t growing man. Nothing’s happening.”
James: “Well, they did tell us it would take a long time, remember?”
David: “Yeah, but..there’s nothing. I don’t even know if it’s WORKING.”
James: “It hasn’t even been a year yet. The nursery said these things are really slow to get started. Let’s keep at it, I’m confident it’ll work.”
David: “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I should probably fertilize them. It’s been a while.”
Over the next few weeks James saw a David out watering and fertilizing with a renewed energy. He was still using tap water, but hey, at least he was back at it.
Then just like before, he saw him less and less, and then eventually not at all.
Finally one day he bumped into him.

The Giant Bamboo (Part 2)

Here’s where we left off last time…
James and David are both growing bamboos. James is taking it more seriously and David started giving up, but James got him to keep on going.

James: “Hey David, where you been man! Good to finally see you back out here.”
David: “Yeah dude, I’m planting some apple trees.”
James: “Oh, apple trees? What about the bamboo? I haven’t seen you out here in a while.”
David: “Forget the bamboo trees James. They didn’t work at all. Didn’t work for you either right?”
James: “But David, we’ve still got a ways to go. It hasn’t even been two years yet.”
David: “Man, I don’t even know if it’s going to work. What if it doesn’t? I’ve heard stories where people spend all sorts of time watering, fertilizing, and it doesn’t work! I’m not even sure if the soil is good here, so I’m planting these apple trees in a different spot just to be safe.”
“Besides, apples are HOT right now. People are paying a lot for them. I figure I can make more money from these than I would have for the bamboo. You should do it too.”
James: “Hmmm, I think I’m just going to stick to my original plan.”
David: “Dude there’s nothing growing! What if you never get any bamboo trees? You would have spent so much time for NOTHING!”
James: “They told us how long it would take. If I just keep doing what they suggested, I should get the results.”
David: “Yeah, but if you don’t, you will have wasted all this time.”
That kind of frustrated James.
“What if David was right”, he thought. “What if I spend all this time and nothing ever comes of it.”
It was demotivating to think about.
“Maybe David has a point. I’ll look into the apple trees.”

The Giant Bamboo (Part 3)

Before we continue the story, quick update.
The GM of the Crowne Plaza in Greenbelt, MD just called me and I can't believe it....
While her team was setting up yesterday for our 2 Day REI Rehab Mastery Workshop this weekend they realized they could add additional seats for our SOLD OUT weekend.
Terra said there are 12 additional VIP seats available. So this is your last chance to grab one of these newly found seats.
Back to our story. Here’s what has happened so far…
James and David are both growing bamboos. James is taking it more seriously and David started giving up, but James got him to keep on going.
At least for a little while.
Then David hopped to a new, more profitable idea, planting apple trees.
He told James he was wasting his time with bamboos that might not ever grow, and to switch to apples instead.
Onwards.

“What if David was right”, he thought. “What if I spend all this time and nothing ever comes of it.”
It was demotivating to think about.
“Maybe David has a point. I’ll look into the apple trees.”
The next morning when he woke up, James went into his living room to research apple trees. When he sat down with his laptop, he couldn’t help but look up at his vision board. The beautiful bamboo tree sanctuary he’d been imagining for years.
He decided to stick to the plan.
James didn’t see David much after that, but whenever he did David would make jokes about James’ bamboo forest dreams, and how he was wasting his time.
The second year after planting his apple trees, David’s trees started to bear fruit. He bragged to David about how much money he was making from selling the fruit.
David: “Look! Man, I told you! There’s so much money to be made with apple trees and you’re missing out.”
David said he was making a lot of money, so maybe it was worth considering. James looked into the apple business again.
This time his vision board didn’t stop him. He spent days looking into it. He called some nurseries to get pricing, and seriously considered making a big purchase.
He called his business mentor Tammy and told him of his potential plans.
Tammy: “Wait, I don’t understand. Why do you want to get into apple trees?”
James: “My neighbor David has some and is making a lot of money. He told me he’s crushing it right now selling apples.”
Tammy: “But why do you want to sell them? I mean, you’re doing pretty well. You don’t need the money. So why apple trees? Plus, what about the bamboo trees?”
James: “Tammy, the bamboo trees might not even work! Plus, apples are hot right now, not bamboo.”
Tammy: “I think you’re getting distracted. Let me ask you a question James. Why did you decide to plant the bamboo trees?”
James: “I’ve always wanted to have them. I want to build a sanctuary near my pond for my family.”
Tammy: “Right. So it has nothing to do with them being “hot”. You had a deeper vision. Don’t let the potential short term money distract you.”
James: “You know what, you’re right. Thanks Tammy. I knew there was a reason I called you.”
After he hung up the phone James had immense clarity. He scrapped all the apple tree research on his desk, and stuck to the plan.

The Giant Bamboo (Part 4)

Here’s where we are so far in the story.

But then David’s apple trees started bearing fruit. And he told James he was making a lot of money and that James should get in on it.
James was seriously considering it, but he called his mentor Tammy to talk it through.
She asked him an important question.
===
He kept taking care of his bamboo trees, and patiently waited for his vision to become reality.
Every time he saw David he’d hear about what an opportunity he was missing out on.
Time continued on, and there was still no signs of progress in the backyard.
James went away with his wife for a short vacation. They had such a great time while they were there he didn’t spend much time worrying about the lack of progress in his backyard.
When he returned home, he was excited to see the kids, and to get back to work.
He pulled up to his driveway and his kids excitedly ran out to the car to greet them.
“Mom, Dad, we have a surprise! Come quick!”
They sprinted out to the back of their house as they tried to keep up with the kids.
His jaw dropped when they reached the backyard.
“Oh my god!”
The bamboo trees had come out of the ground. They were everywhere!
He realized it had been over five years since he planted them, right around the time they told him they should start to show. He couldn’t believe it.
“It worked!”
He even saw some next door at David’s house. It didn’t look like David was home though. His car was gone, and there were apples all over his lawn.
“That’s weird”, James thought*. I hope he’s alright.*
Each day the bamboo trees grew more and more. He had his boys stand in the same spot in the yard once a week, to show how fast they were growing. They loved it.
A neighbor down the street came by to see. “Wow! Man, you’re so lucky! I wish I had bamboo trees in my backyard. It’s like they popped up overnight. Lucky you man!”
A few weeks later David returned home. James saw him and headed over.

James was seriously considering it, but he called his mentor Tammy to talk it through.
She asked him an important question and he realized he was getting distracted by short-term ideas. He stayed committed to his long term vision.
After returning from a vacation, he found a big surprise.
His bamboos had shot straight up out of the ground. And they were growing fast!
Here’s how the story ends...
===
James: “David, you’ve got to check it out man! The bamboo trees are growing.”
David: “What!? No way!”
David headed in to his yard with James.
David: “Holy crap, you’re right. They really are growing..”
His yard didn’t quite look like James’. His were a lot smaller, and many of them were yellow.
James: “What’s up with the apples David, they’re all over the place. That’s a lot of money rotting on the ground out here. Everything okay?”
David: “Yeah man, but I found a new opportunity... I know of some guys making a ton of money. I’ll make even more than I was with the apples.”
James’ wife called over to him because he had a phone call.
James: “Oh, I’ve gotta run. Let’s chat soon, I want to hear about your new business idea.”
He said goodbye to David and headed back home.
As the months passed, the bamboo trees grew taller and taller. It looked more and more like his vision board every day.
The next time he bumped into David, he wanted to find out how his new project was going.
James: “What’s up David, how’s the new venture?”
David: “Didn’t really pan out man.”
He was pretty short with him, he could tell he didn’t want to talk about it.
James: “Sorry to hear man. At least you’ve got the apple business though.”
David: “Ahh, well the apple business isn’t so great at the moment. So many people are selling them now, so prices dropped a lot. It’s not even worth it to deal with anymore. You can barely make anything on them now. Besides, mine are smaller and less valuable than some of the others who are doing it. Waste of time. Too competitive.”
James: “Oh, that sucks David, really sorry.”
David looked out at his yard, then at James’.
David: “Man, I wish I had just stuck with the bamboo trees like you. If I had, my yard would look amazing like yours right now. Instead I’ve got a mess of half rotten bamboos and dead apples everywhere.”
David’s yard was a stinking mess compared to James’ massive bamboo forest.
James had built the sanctuary around the pond that he’d always envisioned.
He finally took his vision board down, because his yard looked even better than what he had initially hoped for.
His persistence had paid off. All those years of watering, fertilizing, and making sure the bamboo trees had the best nutrients.
It was all worth it.
He placed his original vision board in a package, along with a big photo of his family on their new sanctuary by the pond, surrounded by bamboo trees.
He sealed it up, and sent it off to Tammy.
See, Tammy had been mentoring James for years, and was the one who initially told him to put the vision board of his bamboo forest up in his office. He was glad Tammy had been there to keep him on track when he got pulled away. He knew Tammy would get a lot of satisfaction from seeing his vision become a reality.
